This latest travesty of a column kind of makes me want to claw my eyes out with a nail file.
It is precisely that quality that allowed him to order the surge in Iraq in the face of intense opposition from the political establishment (of both parties), the foreign policy establishment (led by the feckless Iraq Study Group), the military establishment (as chronicled by Woodward) and public opinion itself. The surge then effected the most dramatic change in the fortunes of an American war since the summer of 1864.
Right...and over at The American Prospect, careful reading yields seven out of 10 experts saying the surge was not the sole cause of success; of the three who said the surge was useful, two said that more effective counter-insurgency tactics were a major cause AND that the surge had failed in its strategic goal of allowing Iraq to reach some sort of political reconcilation.
And let's not forget FISA: when AWESOME, FREEDOM-LOVING, INDEPENDENT, SELF-RELIANT DEMOCRACIES spy on their citizens, it's just to guarantee that our people are safe; when EVIL, OPPRESSIVE, FILTHY COMMUNISTS spy on their citizens, they should be sanctioned and dealt with harshly. That's just an example of how DEMOCRACY is simply uber-AWESOME.
Let's not forget the grand finale: torture. As usual, The Daily Show with John Stewart probably does the best job of explaining how ridiculous this is:
Oh, and by the way: this edition of the Borowitz Report is hilarious...and, quite disturbingly, is something I wouldn't put it past John McCain to actually say.
